🕹️ Pac-Man was originally named 'Puck-Man'

The world's most famous yellow character didn't start with the name we all know today. When it was created in Japan in 1980, it had a different title.

From Puck to Pac:

  • 🇯🇵 The original Japanese name was 'Puck-Man', derived from the phrase 'Paku-Paku', which describes the sound of an opening and closing mouth
  • 🚫 When the game came to the U.S., developers feared that vandals would change the 'P' to an 'F' on arcade machines, creating an inappropriate word

A Cultural Phenomenon:

  • 🍕 The design of Pac-Man was inspired by a pizza with a missing slice while the creator, Toru Iwatani, was having lunch
  • 📈 It remains one of the highest-grossing and best-known video games of all time, officially becoming an icon of the 1980s pop culture
